Men and Abortion: The Forgotten Legacy of Roe v. Wade

By Ryan C. MacPherson, Ph.D.

Presented for the 2013 MayDay Conference: 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., May 2, 2013

Abstract:

Abortion typically is framed as either a woman’s issue (the right to choose) or a child’s issue (the right to life); seldom are the interests of adult men—as husbands and fathers—afforded equal consideration. This presentation focuses on the manner in which abortion impacts men by examining the Supreme Court’s treatment of paternal rights, the emotional state of men involved in abortions, and the potential for men and women to embrace a common, life-affirming hope.
